Soma is an essential icon in the World State society in "Brave New World", a society that is primarily drug-dependant. Soma is a drug that makes you hallucinate and calm you to shy away from the true reality they're living in.

Aldous Huxley's envision of society in the future lacks morality and ethics. In the novel, he lays out different aspects of his prediction of a morally corrupt society. These predictions consists of, casual sex, brain washing, and mind altering drugs. Huxley warns on a possible dystopia  throughout his novel.

Soma is a drug that numbs away pain or anything that may come in the way of happiness. In Brave New World, the society Huxley builds is drug dependent which makes it easy to control people, other than the Alpha Plus and Bernard Marx.  In reality, an individual would have to deal with their issues head on, instead of having a drug that let's an individual escape from reality. Ideally, such is slowly happening today in our society. Drugs are a form of release and escape from reality, temporarily. The fear is that drugs will become an essential part of our society to become "happy".

Another prediction Huxley incorporates is that, committing to one relationship and having a family is nonexistent. They are built up to believe that it is morally wrong to have a child. Linda and John for example, Linda was judged and unclaimed by her people because she had John.
